The magic of Fleetwood Mac’s songwriting cannot be denied. Multiple hit singles, platinum albums, and successful tours have placed the band in a league of their own. While Fleetwood Mac has not released a studio album since their 2003 Say You Will, the band has been busy working on projects in the studio. The latest project to come out of the studio is not a Fleetwood Mac album, but a collaboration between Christine McVie and Lindsey Buckingham.
The album, tentatively titled Buckingham McVie, features Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, however this is not a Fleetwood Mac album. The collaboration between Christine and Lindsey also did not come as a surprise to either of them. In a 2016 article with the LA Times, McVie admitted, “We’ve always written well together, Lindsey and I, and this has just spiraled into something really amazing that we’ve done between us (latimes.com).” Lindsey Buckingham further revealed in the latest Uncut that he grew up a lot since the last time the two worked together (being a father of three and also a husband for twenty years). He said both have had their journeys (uncut.co.uk). Initially, the songs were pieces that Buckingham had worked on with Mick Fleetwood and John McVie, however, they needed something more, so Lindsey invited Christine to come in and take a look. She played around with the melodies and added lyrics to some. Buckingham stated she came up with something far better than he could have come up with himself (latimes.com). McVie also found it ironic that the two created a duet album after 45 years of working together.
Along with the Buckingham McVie release, fans might not have to wait too long for a new album from Fleetwood Mac. McVie sat down with Rolling Stone in September 2016 to discuss the reissue of Mirage and also a possible new Fleetwood Mac album. McVie said, “Well, we cut seven songs in the studio already for the start of a brand-new studio album. Which we did probably nearer two years ago. We shelved that temporarily and then went on the road and did the tour. And now, actually, I think we’re going back in in October to try to finish it off… (rollingstone.com)” In regards to Stevie Nicks songwriting with the band, she has not worked on anything as of that interview and most recently has been finishing up her 24K Gold Tour, but they are hopeful. If history of these talented musicians shows anything, it’s that Fleetwood Mac isn’t done by a long shot; the band will be writing and performing together very soon.
For now, fans can enjoy Buckingham McVie. While neither Buckingham’s website nor McVie’s Facebook show any indication of pre-order of their duet album at this time, music news sites and interviews with the artists indicate the album may be out as early as May, but most likely slated for this summer.
Fleetwood Mac’s songwriting magic is apparent throughout their successful career, and while the band has been working on projects in the studio, no official band album is scheduled for release. However, members Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie worked on a duet titled Buckingham McVie. Slated for release as early as May of this year, fans will most likely see its release during the summer months. No matter the release date, Buckingham McVie is sure to be an album to purchase.
