This past Saturday night in Auburn Hills, Michigan, where he was playing the venue’s final concert, Bob Seger announced that his latest album I Knew You When will be dedicated to his longtime friend Glenn Frey (billboard.com). For those unfamiliar to the connection between Seger and Frey, they were friends long before each hit it big.
Both rockers grew up in Detroit and were a part of the local rock scene of the mid-60s. Seger told Rolling Stone he and Glenn listened to Jimi Hendrix’s Are You Experienced in ’67 and joked about being out of jobs. However, Seger scored his first hit “Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man” within the next year and Frey made it big with the Eagles (rollingstone.com). Both artists went on to have very successful careers as well. Even though those careers took the musicians in different directions, the two songwriters kept in touch.
This dedication comes on the heels of Seger’s song written exclusively for Frey, which was written in January 2017. Called “Glenn Song”, the song was not intended to be a hit, but rather a song in tribute to a man who was his life-long friend. Once recorded, Seger released the song for free on his website.
Seger’s new album will be released in November of this year.
